Production of precision tubes

The technological process for production of hydraulic cylinders requires new quality solutions to manufacture individual parts and the assembly unit as a whole.

This task set before manufacturers of hydraulic cylinders is imposed by the requirements to improve technical features of products and reduce their cost.

One of the options for optimizing the process is using standard equipment, which is today fully represented by specialized manufacturers.

Standard products, such as hardware and fittings, may include raw material for cylinder tubes and bars, sealing elements, lugs. Specialization in mass production of certain types of equipment allows manufacturers to achieve maximum results on product quality, its performance properties, final cost.

The main element of the standard configuration is the cylinder tube.

According to a traditional Russian technology, boring the inside diameter of the tube implies a preliminary boring operation followed by a finishing rolling or honing to the required size and roughness. At the same time, there are often significant restrictions on processing modes, diameter and processed length, since the equipment used is highly specialized or all-purpose. Application of several operations, low productivity of the equipment and its automation, the training level of the worker are reflected in the final result of manufacturing.

Modern European equipment and technologies helped accelerate this process significantly by combining all operations of the technological cycle of processing the internal diameter into one, with full control of processing by adaptive equipment control systems.

When this equipment first appeared at the end of the last century, it brought significant changes in the approach to the technology of manufacturing hydraulic cylinders and isolating raw material for cylinder tube into a standard nomenclature.

In parallel, the need arose for more qualitative raw material both in terms of its geometrical characteristics and mechanical properties. A cold-drawn precision tube is perfect in terms of its parameters. It is made of a hot-deformed or welded tube by method of drawing or cold rolling, depending on the diameter, wall thickness and the amount of deformation.

After cold deformation, such a precision tube acquires mechanical characteristics that are improved almost twice, and the required geometrical parameters. When the tube is normalized in furnaces with a protective atmosphere, the internal stresses of the metal after deformation are eliminated, which helps preserve its geometric characteristics without leading to decarburization.

Initially, the requirements to precision tubes were described in DIN EN 2391, then the requirements were clarified and specified in standard EN 10305.

The manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders only needs to cut off the tube of the required length and to perform technological operations related to the specifics of manufacturing a cylinder tube.
